AILET

What is AILET?

AILET stands for the All India Law Entrance Test. It is a national-level law entrance exam conducted annually by National Law University, Delhi (NLU Delhi).

Unlike most other National Law Universities (NLUs) across India — which use CLAT scores for admission — NLU Delhi does not accept CLAT scores. It conducts AILET as its own independent entrance examination to admit students into its undergraduate (B.A. LL.B. Hons.), postgraduate (LL.M.), and Ph.D. law programs.

How It Works

• Conducting Body: NLU Delhi administers the exam once a year (usually in December for the academic session starting the following year).
• Exam Mode: Offline (pen-and-paper OMR-based test).
• Target Audience: High school graduates (for B.A. LL.B.) and law graduates (for LL.M.).

Syllabus & Pattern (B.A. LL.B. Hons.)

Unlike CLAT — which is heavily passage-based across all sections — AILET has a slightly different, speed-oriented structure.

Note: There is no legal reasoning/aptitude section in the undergraduate AILET paper.

1. English Language

• Marks: 50 · Questions: 50
• Syllabus: Reading comprehension passages, vocabulary (synonyms, antonyms, idioms), grammar, sentence correction, fill-in-the-blanks, and inference-based questions.

2. Current Affairs & General Knowledge

• Marks: 30 · Questions: 30
• Syllabus: Contemporary national and international events, awards, sports, geography, history, Indian polity, government initiatives, and major legal/constitutional updates.

3. Logical Reasoning

• Marks: 70 · Questions: 70
• Critical Reasoning: Assumptions, arguments, inferences, cause-and-effect, statement-conclusion.
• Analytical Reasoning: Puzzles, seating arrangements, blood relations, syllogisms, coding-decoding, series completion, direction sense.
• Legal principles may occasionally appear within logical reasoning questions to test problem-solving, but prior legal knowledge is not required.

Selection Criteria

• Merit Rank: Selection is strictly based on the candidate's rank in the AILET merit list (total raw score out of 150).
• Eligibility (B.A. LL.B.): Must have passed Higher Secondary School Examination (10+2) or equivalent with a minimum of 45% marks (40% for SC/ST/PwD).
• Tie-Breaking Procedure: If two or more candidates secure equal marks in AILET, the tie is resolved as follows:
  1. Higher marks in the Logical Reasoning section.
  2. Candidate senior in age.
  3. Computerised draw of lots.
• Counselling & Seat Allotment: NLU Delhi publishes category-wise merit lists. Shortlisted candidates are invited for online counselling, document verification, and fee payment to confirm their seat.
