Common University Entrance Test (CUET)

The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) was introduced to establish a common entrance platform for students across boards (CBSE, ICSE, State Boards etc.) seeking admissions to the UG courses of various universities of India. Over the years, more universities are expected to join this platform, standardising the admission process across universities in India.

Structure of the Exam

CUET has three sections:

• Section I: Languages (13 languages to choose from)
• Section II: Domain-Specific Subjects (23 subjects)
• Section III: General Aptitude Test

Section I: Languages (13)

English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, Odiya, Bengali, Assamese, Punjabi, Urdu.

Section II: Domain-Specific Subjects (23)

Accountancy / Book Keeping, Agriculture, Anthropology, Biology / Biotech / Biochem, Business Studies, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Computer Science / IP, Economics, Fine Arts, Geography / Geology, History, Home Science, Knowledge Traditions, Mass Communication, Math / Applied Math, Performing Arts, Physical Education, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Sanskrit, Sociology.

Section III: General Aptitude Test

General Knowledge, Current Affairs, General Mental Ability, Numerical Ability, Quantitative Reasoning, Logical and Analytical Reasoning, General Science & Environmental Literacy.

Question Format

• Section I (Language): Language tested via Reading Comprehension based on Factual, Literary/Narrative, Literary Aptitude and Vocabulary passages.
• Section II (Domain): MCQ-based questions built off NCERT Class XII syllabus only.
• Section III (General Aptitude): GK, Current Affairs, General Mental Ability, Numerical Ability, Quantitative Reasoning (algebra, geometry, statistics), and Logical / Analytical Reasoning.

Additional notes:

• Candidates can choose a maximum of 5 subjects across all three sections.
• Exams are conducted in multiple shifts.
• Delhi University considers only subjects studied in Class XII.
• Marking Scheme: +5 for correct, −1 for incorrect.
• Total Questions: 50 per test paper; all questions are compulsory.
• Duration: 60 minutes per subject paper.
• NTA recommends selecting at least one language and the General Aptitude Test.

Recommended Subject Combination

The following combination lets you apply to the widest set of programmes:

1. English
2. Domain Mathematics / Applied Mathematics
3. Two additional domain subjects
4. General Aptitude Test

With this combination you can apply to 100% of seats at DU, State Universities, and reputed private universities. Approximately 3,445 courses out of 4,200 across 249 universities require the General Aptitude Test (GAT).

In roughly 90% of universities that accept CUET-UG scores, 82% of courses require the General Aptitude Test.

Outside DU, GAT is Mandatory for Admission

Myths & Facts

Myth: GAT is not required for DU admissions.

• Over 30,000 seats — including B.Com, Management, and BA courses — require GAT.
• This includes 17+ important courses across Delhi University.

Myth: GAT is not necessary for BBA/BMS in CUET.

• Almost all Central/State Universities require GAT + Language.
• For management courses, GAT contributes to 70% of total marks.

Myth: CUET only consists of Domain subjects.

• 90% of universities require Language + GAT for various courses.
• NTA strongly recommends opting for Language + GAT to maximise eligibility.

Myth: Commerce students should apply only for B.Com Programme or B.Com Honours.

• There are more seats available for B.Com than B.Com (Hons) in DU.
• Top colleges like KMC, Ramjas, and Sri Venkateswara offer seats for both.
• It is advisable to apply for both and decide later.
