About CUET (UG)
The Common University Entrance Test (UG) is the single national admission test for undergraduate programmes at India's central, state, deemed and private universities. It is conducted by the NTA in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode and replaces the individual entrance tests that many universities previously ran.
For UG 2026, CUET admits students into 249 participating universities across roughly 30,000+ seats — including delhi's DU cluster, JNU, BHU, AMU, Jamia and dozens of state and deemed universities. Because the same score is accepted everywhere, one well-prepared attempt now opens more doors than any single-university entrance ever did.

Question format
Every section follows a similar objective-type format, but the source material differs.
- Section I (Languages) — MCQs drawn from reading-comprehension passages: factual, literary/narrative, and vocabulary-based questions.
- Section II (Domain Subjects) — MCQs based on the Class 12 syllabus of the chosen subject, with a mix of conceptual, application and case-style questions.
- Section III (General Test) — MCQs on general knowledge, current affairs, general mental ability, numerical ability, quantitative reasoning (up to Class 8 level) and logical/analytical reasoning.
- Marking scheme across all sections: +5 for a correct answer, −1 for an incorrect answer, 0 for an unattempted question.
Pattern of CUET (UG)
| Section | Topics / Subjects | Attempt | Time | No. of Subjects | Combination |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Section I | Language | 50 | 60 mins | 13 | Min 1 – Max 2 |
| Section II | Domain Specific Test | 50 | 60 mins | 23 | Min 1 – Max 4 |
| Section III | General Aptitude Test | 50 | 60 mins | LR, QA, GK/CA | Highly Recommended |
Marking: +5 for every correct answer, −1 for every incorrect answer, 0 for an unattempted question — applied uniformly across all sections.
Important notes
- A candidate can appear in a maximum of one language from Section IA, one additional language from Section IB, up to six domain subjects from Section II, and the General Test in Section III.
- Universities publish their own eligibility grid — the same CUET scorecard is accepted, but the required subject combination differs by programme.
- The exam is delivered in CBT mode across multiple slots and dates during the CUET UG window.

Myths & Facts
Myth
BBA and BMS programmes don't need the General Test — you can skip it.
Facts
- Almost every reputed university that offers BBA / BMS through CUET evaluates candidates on the General Test score, not on a domain subject.
- Skipping the General Test disqualifies you from most BBA / BMS shortlists — including flagship programmes at central and state universities.
- The General Test is also the shortest route into BA (Hons) programmes across DU, BHU, JNU, AMU and Jamia — a single paper unlocks all of them.
Myth
CUET is easier than the old university-specific entrance exams, so it needs less preparation.
Facts
- CUET tests the Class 12 syllabus at a strict pattern with negative marking — +5 correct, −1 wrong — so accuracy matters more than volume.
- Cut-offs at flagship universities are pushed up by the sheer number of candidates writing the same test — being 'through' the paper is not the same as being competitive.
- Consistent mock practice is the only reliable way to build the pacing needed to attempt 40 of 50 domain questions in 45 minutes.
Myth
You have to pick the same domain subjects you studied in Class 12.
Facts
- You can appear for any of the 23 domain subjects in Section II — the eligibility check is set by the university, not by the board you studied under.
- Many students opt for a domain subject that overlaps with their Class 12 core (for example, Business Studies for a Commerce student) plus one 'stretch' subject aligned with the programme they want.
- Always cross-verify the university's programme-level eligibility grid before locking your subject combination.
Myth
CUET is only for admission to a few big central universities.
Facts
- CUET (UG) 2026 is accepted by **249 participating universities** — central, state, deemed and private — covering more than **30,000+ seats** across UG programmes.
- One CUET scorecard is used to apply to every participating university, so a single well-timed attempt replaces four or five separate entrance exams.
- The list has grown every cycle since CUET launched — expect further additions in the UG 2026 bulletin.
